Samsung selects Agilent parts for mobile phone

Aug. 12, 2004 – Samsung has selected five mobile phone components by Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A, Profile, News, Web) for its new VM-A680 phone, including two MEMS-based devices.

The 3.35-ounce phone includes Agilent’s ACMD-7401 film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) duplexer, a vibrating membrane on a silicon substrate that allows two-way talk in a mobile phone. Agilent said the duplexer is less than one-tenth the volume of competing devices.

Agilent’s FBAR technology also is behind the phone’s radio-frequency filter, which selects the proper frequency among many conversations being broadcast and presents it to the rest of the phone’s electronics. The filter, which Agilent also said is the industry’s smallest, is 1 millimeter high with a 1.6-millimeter-by-2 millimeter footprint. The miniature components help provide the phone with extra space and power savings to add more features, such as video and photo capabilities, and extend the talk time by 30 minutes, according to a news release.
