Intel shrinks its transistors

Aug. 30, 2004 – Intel Corp. is furthering its advance into the nanoscale with Monday’s announcement that it has shrunk its transistors to 35 nanometers.

The chipmaker has built fully functional 70-megabit memory chips with more than a half-billion transistors that are 30-percent smaller than the industry’s standard. The 35-nanometer measurement refers to the transistor’s gate, or the switch that turns a transistor on and off.

Intel said in a written release that the new process technology boosts the number of transistors on a chip, which should allow for increased features and performance. The company in 2002 announced its plans to develop the technology that stretches apart the atoms in a silicon wafer and enables the creation of transistors below 100 nanometers.
