PNI develops AFM for nanoscale lubrication

Nov. 25, 2003 — Pacific Nanotechnology Inc. has developed atomic force microscopy applications for nanotribology, or lubrication at the molecular level, according to a news release.

Nanotribology studies could be useful in the semiconductor and data storage industries in an effort to improve polishing processes and lubrication of data storage substrates. Another potential sector is the automotive industry, where development of lubricants depends on molecular layers sticking to a material’s surface.

The atomic-force microscope can be used on all types of materials, including ceramics, metals, polymers, semiconductors, optical surfaces and biomaterials, the release said.
