Omron launches last-mile MEMS devices

July 11, 2003 — Omron Corp. has launched what it calls “ultracheap” MEMS-based optical devices for fiber-optic networks, according to a news release.

The Japan-based automation firm said the switches, multiplexers and micro lens arrays are significantly cheaper than competing devices because they are produced through replication — making thousands of parts from a metal mold. Because of the lower cost, the company said, the technology could be used to connect fiber to the home and transmit data at speeds 100 times faster than current broadband offerings.

Samples will be available starting next week, the release said.
