Mar. 2, 2005 — Lightconnect, a Newark, Calif., developer of MEMS-based components and modules for optical networks, announced today that it recently shipped its 40,000th variable optical attenuator (VOA) to a large optical system manufacturer.
The company now has 55 paying customers, according to Sushil Shah, its chief operating officer. The company’s goal in 2005 is to further increase its market share — which Shah claims to be 50 percent — by providing reliable and cost-effective products.
The company also announced today that its latest product, the Fast Variable Optical Attenuator Series 5000, has passed the reliability requirements listed in Telcordia GR-1209 and GR-1221. This was the last hurdle for what Lightconnect says is the industry’s smallest MEMS VOA before world-wide field deployment.
