Oak Ridge National Lab’s Thundat named corporate fellow

May 13, 2005 — The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory named Thomas Thundat, the inventor of microcantilevers and head of the lab’s Nanoscale Science and Devices Group in the life sciences division, a UT-Battelle Corporate Fellow. He was among three researchers to receive the honor on Thursday.

A physicist, Thundat is a leader in nanomechanical sensors. His honors include two R&D 100 Awards, three National Federal Consortium in Technology Transfer Awards, the Jesse Beams Award, the Discover Magazine Award, ASME Pioneer Award and the Scientific American Top 50 Technology Leaders Award. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a Battelle distinguished inventor. Thundat has received 19 patents for nanomechanical sensor technologies ranging from medical instrumentation to land mine detection.

Based in Oak Ridge, Tenn., the lab is managed for the DOE by UT-Battelle.
