Microvision revs MEMS printer engine

June 13, 2003 — Microvision Inc. will develop a new scanning engine for high-speed laser printers based on its micromirror technology for an Asian manufacturer of printers and office equipment, according to a news release.

The Bothell, Wash.-based maker of display and imaging technologies said the first-phase contract calls for Microvision to produce a preliminary design of a MEMS-based, laser-printing engine. The approach is expected to provide advantages in size and cost over conventional scanning devices, the release said.

The customer and terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Microvision described the company as a major player with tremendous reach into the global market for home and office printers. Microvision said the contract would not result in near-term product revenue.

Microvision, listed on Nasdaq, closed Thursday at $6.40 a share, up from Wednesday’s close of $5.98.
