Lancet calls for papers on nanomedicine

Aug. 29, 2003 — The U.K.-based international medical journal The Lancet, writing that nanoscience offers extraordinary possibilities for medicine, is calling on the medical community to submit articles and reviews on the emerging field.

In an editorial published in the Aug. 30 edition, the peer-reviewed publication said nanomedicine is a valuable new technology, despite some concern over the unknown effects of nanomaterials in humans and the environment. The Lancet cited several potential benefits, including effective delivery systems for drug and gene therapies, new means for body or organ imaging and diagnostic specificity to biopsy studies.

The editorial called for a higher profile in medicine for the new discipline. It seeks submissions of papers by Dec. 31, and plans to publish a special issue on nanomedicine next spring.
