Segway rolls toward top of Amazon list

Dec. 30, 2002 — The Segway Human Transporter, a self-balancing personal transportation vehicle, is among the best selling items on Amazon.com Inc.’s Web site, the Reuters news service reported.

The report said the vehicle, which uses MEMS gyroscopes and tilt sensors to maintain balance, is in the top half percent of Amazon.com sales. A $495 nonrefundable deposit is required to buy the $4,950 vehicle, which is scheduled to ship March 1, 2003. Segway LLC is based in Manchester, N.H.
