Firms expand plans on flame-resistant plastics

June 19, 2002 — Nanocor Inc. and Gitto Global Corp. said they are expanding their effort to create flame resistant plastics using nanoclay particles, according to a news release.

The firms, which have developed composites that are stronger, lighter and more environmentally friendly than traditional flame retardant materials, are seeking to integrate the technology in more applications.

The process involves dispersing nanometer-size clay particles into common plastics to form the composites. The technology is appropriate for many plastics, but the firms are focusing on one called polyolefins because it’s used in automotive, electronic, construction and industrial applications.
