March 11, 2003 — Delphi Corp., a Troy, Mich.-based auto supplier, announced that Subaru of America selected its Recognition passive occupant detection system for its Baja, Forrester, Outback and Legacy models starting in the 2006 model year. Delphi valued the three-year agreement to be worth about $48 million, according to a news release.
The system uses a seat-based sensor to determine the presence and size of a person before deploying an air bag in the passenger seat. The system automatically decides whether to deploy the air bag without any feedback from the driver or passenger.
