Jan. 29, 2003 — Taiwanese phone company Chunghwa Telecommunications Co. Ltd. is moving into field trial with three MEMS-based photonic switches made by San Jose, Calif.-based Calient Networks Inc. in an effort to build a next-generation, nationwide optical network, according to a news release.
Chunghwa said it chose Calient’s DiamondWave PXC for the trials because of the switching system’s low cost, low power consumption and high efficiency and reliability. The Taiwanese telecom also noted the system’s fault-free operation in earthquake testing.
The DiamondWave provides transparent optical connections without electrical components or conversions, the release said.
