US Global tests nano-based armored turret

March 27, 2003 — US Global Aerospace Inc. has been conducting live-fire testing of its nanomaterial-based protection shield for military vehicles, according to a news release.

The Nevada-based company said it’s testing the Save a Gunner Turret Armor System against ammunition in conventional military and armor piercing configurations. US Global said the tests, conducted in a secure but undisclosed facility, are designed to provide the highest levels of ballistic protection for U.S. forces.

The system provides durability, strength and low weight, which come from the company’s G-Lam nanofiber material. The turret system, which weighs less than 200 pounds, is designed for Humvee military vehicles but other units are being developed for Land Rover and Unimog vehicles, the release said.
