Simpler Networks gets grant for MEMS

Sept. 3, 2002 — Canada’s National Research Council (NRC) awarded nearly (U.S.) $175,000 to Simpler Networks for a MEMS-based research project, according to a company news release.

The Montreal-based telecom firm said the grant will support a project called Miniaturization of the Next-Generation Micro-Relay. The firm said its microrelays, which are MEMS switches designed for copper loop, are 90 percent smaller than conventional relays and cheaper to make.

The grant was issued through the NRC’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, a government program that supports small- and medium-sized businesses in advancing technology while creating jobs and boosting research and development, the release said.
