June 2, 2008 — Innovative Micro Technology (IMT), which calls itself “the world’s leading MEMS contract manufacturer/foundry partner,” announced today that it is expanding its efforts and personnel in the BioMEMS arena. IMT has seen dramatically increased interest in its foundry and design services from biomedical, biosciences, biotech, and pharmaceutical companies and is expanding its efforts and personnel in response. In an interview with Small Times, IMT’s Monteith Heaton said that medical applications now comprise about 30% of the company’s work. IMT’s core competencies for BioMEMS include microfluidics, valving, actuators, pumps, optics, precision etching, wafer-level packaging, through-Silicon vias, magnetics, and 3D wafer-level integration.
Applications where IMT has customers and experience include cell sorting, implantables, drug delivery, molecular diagnostics and microarrays among others. “We’re seeing increasing interest for BioMEMS applications for our design and foundry services from both large and small companies, and we are adding to our existing biosciences staff for a substantial push in the BioMEMS arena to meet these needs,” said John Foster, CEO of IMT. Current position openings are posted at www.IMTMEMS.com/career.html.
IMT, formed in 2000 to produce MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) devices, has a 130,000 sq ft facility with a 30,000 sq ft Class 100 clean room/fab which, according to the company, is the largest and best-equipped independent MEMS fab in the world. The company was built for volume manufacturing, and provides complete foundry services from design through production.
