December 18, 2008: MEMSIC Inc. has announced a new line of magnetic sensors with enhanced digital compass functionality that will enable a host of new location-based services (LBS) in GPS (global positioning systems) enabled mobile phones and PNDs (personal navigation devices), the company announced in a news release.
MEMSIC’s new MMC212XM is the first in what the company said will be a family of magnetic sensors that offer the greater precision and user-friendly automatic calibration required to expand the LBS capabilities in mobile phones.
The new family of magnetic sensors feature MEMSIC’s Intelligent Heading Correction (IHC) algorithms, which automatically calibrate the device, compensate for the extraneous magnetic interference and combine higher accuracy with a user friendly experience, the company said, adding that the new sensor will draw just 400 microamperes of power, making it suitable for mobile applications.
