Newly patented filtration technology enhances milk product purification

06/01/2005

APEX, N.C.-A filtration technology developed by NCSRT Inc. (www.ncsrt.com) has received three U.S. patents for superior dairy separation and purification of milk, whey and colostrum. The SmartFlow technology employs a process of cross-flow filtration, chromatography and fermentation to separate and fully fractionate usable milk components.

The CONSEP line of SmartFlow filtration modules are designed with proprietary flow channels that reduce gel layer build-up and prevent fouling, and promise a minimum performance yield increase of 200 percent over traditional modules. The flat-sheet filter modules are constructed with a wide range of membrane materials and pore sizes to accommodate ultrafiltration, microfiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis.

According to NCSRT president and CEO Henry Kopf III, SmartFlow’s fluid dynamics technology optimizes membrane use and expands the performance limits of traditional cross-flow filtration and tangential flow filtration. “The ability to produce inexpensive dairy fractions provides the opportunity to manufacture a number of end products with improved nutrition, such as infant formula, sports supplements, and other value-added dairy-based products,” says Kopf.

The company’s filtration technologies are also designed for separation and purification solutions for biotech and pharmaceutical processing. III
