Solid State Technology The gold anniversary
Amazingly, it is now 50 years since Sam Marshall launched Semiconductor Products magazine, which has evolved into today’s Solid State Technology and the web site at www.solid-state.com. The initial magazine covered all aspects of semiconductors and electronics, but as other specialized media emerged, Sam decided to orient the magazine exclusively toward the manufacturing of semiconductors and thin-film devices. Sam was a respected pioneer in the industry, helping in the formation of the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International association (SEMI) and in the founding of the SEMICON shows.
Sam was dedicated to technical excellence, preferring in-depth processing articles written by engineers and scientists, along with verifying data and charts, to more fanciful journalistic reporting. His son, Sid Marshall, who followed Sam as Editor, continued the journal-like approach during his tenure, with advice from an Editorial Advisory Board, a tradition that continues today.
Over the years, the major shifts in processing technology and materials for semiconductor and thin-film manufacturing have been well covered within the pages of Solid State Technology. From the early days in Silicon Valley, to today’s global industry reaching far across Europe and Asia, those involved in semiconductor processing have been able to follow the myriad twists and turns of a dynamic, continuously evolving set of technologies by reading Solid State Technology. With the help of our Editorial Advisory Board, we review some of the highlights of the first 50 years and make some bold predictions about the future.
