Nikon Precision Europe, Langen, Germany, has appointed Hiroshi Sano president. He has worked for Nikon since 1979, most recently at Nikon Precision Singapore Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Nikon Pre-cision Equipment Co. Outgoing president Ryoji Shimosako returns to Japan and a new assignment at Nikon Corp.
Therma-Wave Inc., Fremont, CA, has named Papken Der Torossian chairman of its board of directors. Der Torossian was formerly on the board of directors of the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and the Semiconductor Industry Supplier Association. Giovanni Nocerino has joined the company as its executive VP of worldwide sales and field operations. Most recently, Nocerino was executive VP of SpeedFam-IPEC.
Veeco Instruments Inc., Woodbury, NY, has promoted Don Kania to president of the company. Kania joined Veeco in 1998 as CTO, and currently serves as president of the company's metrology division.
Cymer Inc., San Diego, CA, has appointed Tsunehisa Yamashita president of Cymer Japan Inc. Prior to joining Cymer, Yamashita was GM of the Japanese division of Teradyne Inc.
Tokyo Electron (TEL), Tokyo, Japan, has promoted Kiyoshi Sato to president and CEO of the company. He has worked for TEL since 1979 in a number of senior management positions. He was most recently GM of the company's Clean Track business unit.

Bob Helms has been appointed dean of The University of Texas at Dallas, Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. Helms, a professor emeritus at Stanford University, was most recently president and CEO of International Sematech.
Paula Olson has been elected to the board of directors of Entegris Inc., Chaska, MN. She is founding executive officer of Sterling Commerce Inc.

ASAT Holdings Ltd., Hong Kong and Fremont, CA, has appointed Stephen Shaw to its board of directors. Shaw recently retired as a senior partner at McKinsey and Co. George Shaw Jr. has been named senior VP of operations and managing director of manufacturing. Before joining ASAT, he was senior VP and managing director at Advanced Interconnect Technologies Inc. Semitool Inc., Kalispell, MT, has appointed Donald P. Baumann to its board of directors. He is president and general partner of Baumann International.
Co-CEOs Yoav Nissan-Cohen and Rafi Levin of Tower Semiconductor, Migdal Haemek, Israel, have announced their intent to resign from the company. Additionally, Idan Ofer has elected to step down as the company's chairman, although he will continue to serve on the board. The board has appointed Carmel Vernia as chairman and acting CEO. Most recently, he served as chief scientist at Israel's Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Ellipsiz Ltd., Singapore, has promoted Ong Puay Han to president of its engineering solutions division. Ong joined Ellipsiz four years ago as GM of its wafer fab engineering services division. Roger Li has been appointed country manager at Ellipsiz Shanghai. He was formerly GM of Silicon International Ltd.
Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc., Gloucester, MA, has appointed Kazuo Tabata COO at Varian Semiconductor Equipment KK, Yokohama, Japan. Additionally, Tabata has been named as a board member of the Japanese subsidiary.
AmberWave Systems, Salem, NH, has named Mitch Tyson interim CEO. He is a former CEO of PRI Automation and a member of AmberWave's board of directors. Tyson takes over for Mark Wolf, who will continue his affiliation with the company as a consultant.
Fairchild Semiconductor, South Portland, ME, said that Kirk Pond, president, CEO, and chairman, has extended his contract with the company and will remain in his current roles for an additional two years.

James Morgan, chairman and CEO of Applied Materials Inc., has been appointed vice chairman of the President's Export Council (PEC) by President George W. Bush. The PEC is a national advisory body on international trade.
AMD, Sunnyvale, CA, has promoted Bertrand Cambou to officer of the company and senior VP of the memory group. He was previously group VP of the memory group.
Axcelis Technologies Inc., Beverly, MA, has named William Jennings to its board of directors. Jennings is a former partner of PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and most recently led the company's Risk Management and Internal Controls Consulting Practice. Eric Hsu has been appointed VP of Asia customer operations. Prior to joining Axcelis, Hsu was regional president of Asia Pacific operations for Micronic Laser Systems.

Prior to joining Enthone, Zhang was research director of tin and tin alloy technologies at Technic Inc. Amy Tsang has been promoted to director of marketing for performance coatings, Asia. Tsang has been with Enthone and its OMI predecessor organization for more than 20 years.
Novellus Systems Inc., San Jose, CA, has appointed Chien Chiang VP of R&D. He joins Novellus after having served almost two decades at Intel Corp. Chiang replaces Bob Havemann, who recently assumed the role of VP of process integration and applications. Ann Rhoads has been elected to the company's board of directors. Rhoads is senior VP and CFO at Premier Inc. She replaces Robert Smith, who retired from the board in August.
The VSI Alliance (VSIA), Los Gatos, CA, has elected Michael Kaskowitz, GM of the IP division of Mentor Graphics Corp., president. Timothy O'Donnell is leaving his post as VSIA president.
MRL Industries Inc., Sonora, CA, has appointed Paul Allen European sales manager. He was recently product-marketing manager at Applied Materials.
Brooks Automation Inc., Chelmsford, MA, has hired Joseph Bellini as senior VP of its Software Systems Group. He was most recently CEO of eXcelon. Robert Woodbury Jr. has been named senior VP and CFO. Prior to joining Brooks, Woodbury was VP and corporate controller at Acterna Corp.
