Surface/Interface Inc. (S/II), Sunnyvale, CA, has appointed Jim Owens president and CEO. Before joining the company, Owens was president of Verdant Technologies, a division of Ultratech Stepper. He replaces Charles Bryson, III, S/II's founder, who is now CTO.
Varian Inc., Palo Alto, CA, has promoted Sergio Piras to corporate VP. He was previously GM of Varian Vacuum Technologies in Torino, Italy. Wilson Rudd has also been promoted to corporate VP. Rudd was most recently GM of Varian's electronics manufacturing business.

Pfeiffer Vacuum, Nashua, NH, has appointed Roland Hellmer executive VP. Since joining Pfeiffer in 1985, Hellmer has held a number of positions with the company, including most recently VP of marketing.

Long-time CMP guru Mike Fury will be joining EKC Technology, Hayward, CA, this month as director of process integration for advanced materials. He will oversee commercialization of a technology license EKC bought from Canada's Simon Fraser University last year. Fury recently left Malaysian foundry startup Silterra as head of CMP operations.

STMicroelectronics Inc., Geneva, Switzerland, has named Enrico Villa corporate VP and director of the European region. He was most recently corporate VP for the company's Region Five sales and marketing organization. He succeeds Pietro Fox, who has retired. Carmelo Papa has been appointed to Villa's former position. Papa joined ST in 1983, and has been director of product marketing and customer service for transistors and standard ICs since 1986.
