Company founder Douglas C. Strain is retiring as vice chairman of the board of Electro Scientific Industries Inc. (ESI), Portland, OR. He cofounded ESI in 1944, serving as president until 1980 and vice chairman since 1985.

SiliconTech Inc., Santa Ana, CA, has elected director of marketing Todd Rovazzini to the JEDEC board of directors, the governing body for the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association. Rovazzini was promoted to his present position at SiliconTech earlier this year.
CVC Inc., Rochester, NY, has appointed Maurice Holmes and Thomas McDermott to its board of directors. Holmes is a professor of management practice and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. McDermott was chairman of the board, CEO, and president of Goulds Pumps Inc. from 1994 to 1997.

August Technology, Edina, MN, has named Don Nutzmann VP of engineering. He was most recently VP/GM of the Advanced Technology Division at Secure Computing Corp. Mayson Brooks has been appointed VP of sales and marketing. Brooks was commercial manager of the European Electronics Division of Air Products and Chemicals Inc. Sal Perruccio has been named Western regional sales manager, based in Silicon Valley. Before joining the company, he was employed at FSI International. Robert Backie has been appointed Southwest regional sales manager. Backie comes to August after several years of sales management experience at Aseco Corp.

Heraeus Inc., West Conshohocken, PA, has named Ralf Droste VP of its thick film and SMT product lines at W. C. Heraeus GmbH & Co. KG. Prior to joining Heraeus, Droste was head of sales and marketing in the electronic chemicals sector of the fine chemicals business at Bayer AG.

Philips Semiconductors, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, has appointed Thierry Laurent managing director of its telecom terminals business unit. Laurent is a former senior VP and GM of VLSI's Communications Product Group, which was acquired by Philips earlier this year. He succeeds Hein van der Zeeuw, who has joined Philips Components Product Division as head of Philips Optical Storage.
The Semiconductor Group of Coherent Inc., Santa Clara, CA, has named Tony Hoult applications manager. He most recently served as senior research fellow at the Warwick Manufacturing Group's industrial laser facility at the University of Warwick, UK.
