FSI International Inc., Minneapolis, MN, has appointed Ajit Rode senior VP and GM of Semiconductor Systems Inc., a subsidiary. He has held executive management positions with Spectrian, Novellus, Tektronix, and TriQuint Semiconductor.

Cybeq Nano Technologies, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Materials Corp., Tokyo, Japan, has named Dannie Martz CEO. He was a VP at Varian Associates. Martz replaces Yoshio Nishino, who is now chairman of Cybeq Nano and its sister firm Cybeq Systems. K.C. Venugopal has joined Cybeq Nano as director of operations. He was most recently director of engineering at Unisys Corp.

SensArray Corp., Santa Clara, CA, has named Mei Sun VP of sensor research and development. She has more than 20 years of experience developing sensors and instrumentation, and is a 17-year veteran of Luxtron Corp.

Lam Research Corp., Fremont, CA, has promoted Stephen G. Newberry to the position of president and COO. Newberry joined Lam as executive VP and COO last year.

Semiconductor Equipment Technology, Pleasanton, CA, has appointed John A. Newman VP of sales and marketing. He was formerly VP of North American sales and field operations at Lam Research Corp.

Strasbaugh, San Luis Obispo, CA, has named Tom Cadwell president and COO. He is a thirty-year veteran of Monsanto Electronic Materials, where he was most recently corporate VP and president of MEMC Asia.

Semi Dice Inc., Los Alamitos, CA, has promoted Dan Cormack to VP. He will continue as manager for the company`s Southern California division.

Ultratech Stepper, San Jose, CA, has appointed two new board members. Joel F. Gemunder is president of Omnicare Inc. Thomas D. George is a former president and GM of Motorola Inc.`s Semiconductor Product Division. George has also joined Ultratech`s Technical Advisory Board.

GaSonics International, San Jose, CA, has named Ken Thompson to its board of directors. A 25-year industry veteran, Thompson recently retired as VP of technology, manufacturing engineering at Intel Corp.

Luxtron Corp., Santa Clara, CA, has appointed three executives. Anh Hoang has been named VP of research and development and engineering. Prior to joining the company, he served in executive engi-Anh Hoang neering positions at various companies. Jeffrey Asher has been named VP of worldwide sales and applications engineering. He has had sales, product management, and marketing experience at Raychem, Electronics Division, and Elo Touch Systems. Kimberly Firehammer has been promoted to director of marketing. During her time at Luxtron, she has been responsible for developing a partners program aligning Luxtron with OEMs.

Novellus Systems Inc., San Jose, CA, has elected William R. Spivey to its board of directors. Spivey, group president of Lucent Technologies` Network Products Group, replaces Joseph Van Poppelen, president of Van Poppelen Co., who is retiring after five years of service on the board.

Osmonics, Minnetonka, MN, has promoted Kenton Toomey to executive VP of operations. Toomey joined the company last year as VP of operations. In addition, Osmonics has promoted three executives to VP of special products. A 30-year veteran of the water treatment industry, Wil Pergande is also GM at the company`s Rockland, MA, plant. Rick Lesan was previously assistant to the president for technical development. A.P. Roy Choudhury joined the company in 1995 as assistant to the VP International.

Microbar Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, has named Robert B. MacKnight executive VP of business development. He was previously VP and GM of after-market operations for Cymer Inc. George Canavan has been appointed VP of corporage marketing. Canavan was most recently VP of corporate marketing for the CMP, CVD, and etch businesses of Lam Research Corp. Carter Hall has been named director of strategic programs. Microbar tapped Hall from Ultrafab, where he served as VP of operations.

ASM Lithography (ASML), Veldhoven, The Netherlands, has appointed Dave Chavoustie VP in charge of worldwide sales. Prior to joining the company, he was VP of worldwide sales for Advanced Micro Devices` programmable logic device subsidiary, Vantis, and VP and GM of Advanced Micro`s embedded processor division. Chavoustie replaces Doug Marsh, who will be heading a new ASML operation to be announced later this year.

OPC Technology Inc., San Jose, CA, has appointed Frank Schellenberg VP of strategic marketing. He most recently served as the program and product manager for the Reticle and Photomask Inspection Division of KLA-Tencor Inc.

OnTrak Systems, San Jose, CA, a subsidiary of Lam Research Corp., has named Jim Kuhl VP of operations. Kuhl is a former VP of operations at Adept Technology.

Advanced Energy, Fort Collins, CO, has named Jim Gordley VP of sales for Advanced Energy Industries Inc. He was most recently VP of sales in Semitool Corp.`s Thermal Product Division.

New Focus, Santa Clara, CA, has named Laurie Conner VP of marketing and sales. Conner was director of corporate marketing and new business development at Silicon Valley Group.

Surface/Interface Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, has appointed Robert B. Jaynes VP of marketing and sales. Jaynes has extensive experience in vacuum products, metrology, and defect characterization markets.

SEMATECH, Austin, TX, has appointed Paul Winebarger director of interconnect. He has 14 years of experience in etch processing at Motorola. Winebarger replaces Jon Dahm, who has returned to Motorola following his assignment with the consortium.

Aplex Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, has named Rick LaFrance VP of marketing, sales, and customer support. He was most recently VP of marketing for the Track Systems Division of Silicon Valley Group.

Tegal Corp., Petaluma, CA, has given David B. Graves its 19th Annual Thinker Award. The award, presented at Tegal`s 24th Annual Plasma Etch Technology Seminar, honors Graves for his contributions to the field of plasma etching. Also, Mark Siegel, VP of operations and customer support at Tegal, has passed away after a brief illness. He had joined the company in 1996.

CVC, Rochester, NY, has appointed Gerald Sowers VP of customer service and support. Prior to joining CVC, he was director of customer support at Novellus Systems Inc. Brian Renner has been named VP of sales, semiconductor products. Most recently, he served as Western Region sales manager at Varian Associates.

Varian Associates Inc., Palo Alto, CA, has appointed Laurie Himmelman Alire director of corporate and marketing communications. She joined the company in 1977. Alire will also assume responsibility for all of Varian`s external and internal communications activities on the retirement of Gary E. Simpson, VP of corporate and marketing communications, at the end of the calendar year.

FEI Co., Eindhoven, The Netherlands, has appointed Eric van Cappellen product manager for the development of a Philips scanning transmission electron microscopy tool (TEM/STEM). van Cappellen joined FEI in 1993 as a TEM application specialist.

NEC Electronics has named Hirokazu Hashimoto president and CEO. He was most recently VP of NEC Corp.`s Semiconductor Group. Hashimoto replaces Shigeki Matsue, who has been appointed chairman and a member of NEC Corp.`s board of directors.

Johnson Matthey Electronics (JME), Eden Prairie, MN, has appointed several executives. Benoit Pouliquen has been named executive VP of JME and president of the Semiconductor Packages Group. Malcolm Baxter has been appointed president of Johnson Matthey Advanced Circuits. Don Miller is now president of the Wafer Fabrication Materials Group.

Quester Technology, Fremont, CA, has promoted Jewett Fowler to COO and has appointed him to the company`s board of directors. Prior to this assignment, Fowler was Quester`s VP of worldwide marketing. John Foggiato has been named VP of technology. He was director of advanced product development.

Rodel, Newark, DE, has appointed Peter Burke VP of research and development. Burke comes to Rodel from Advanced Micro Devices.

Robert L. Ciardella, president of Asymtek, Carlsbad, CA, a subsidiary of Nordson Corp., has also been named VP of Nordson Corp.`s Electronic Systems Group. He will manage both organizations. WAVECREST Corp., Minneapolis, MN, has named George Hoedeman VP of sales and marketing. He was previously president and CEO of Micro Vision Corp.

Olin Microelectronic Materials, Mesa, AZ, has named Lindsey Hall director of technology for chemicals and services. He most recently served as technology manager of chemicals and gases for Texas Instruments` Manufacturing Science and Technology Center. Ed Wentworth has been appointed business manager for process chemicals. Prior to joining Olin, he was director of sales and marketing at General Chemical`s Electronics Group. Steve Holland has been named product development manager, diffusion systems. Holland was product manager at Allied Signal, Advanced Microelectronics Materials. Margaret Taylor has been appointed equipment manager, diffusion systems. She has held marketing and engineering positions at Lockheed Martin and Oak Ridge Materials. Charles Newton IV has been named plant manager for Olin`s semiconductor process chemicals facility in Mesa. He was operations manager at the facility.

Brooks Automation Software Corp., Richmond, BC, Canada, a subsidiary of Brooks Automation Inc., has promoted Richard Pickreign to software engineering manager for Brooks` transport module control products. He was product marketing manager. Rick Jeffrey has been named director of software products. He was formerly software engineering manager. Ted Singh has been appointed product marketing manager. Singh was ControlPower product manager.

MOSAID Technologies Inc., Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has appointed Emil Alexov VP of sales and marketing for its Semiconductor Division. He joins the company from Siemens Microelectronics Inc., where he had worldwide responsibility for sales and marketing activities directed at Nortel.

Tower Semiconductor Ltd., San Jose, CA, has named Reuven Marko VP of marketing and sales. He was previously Tower`s director of marketing and sales.

ATOMIKA Instruments GmbH, Munich, Germany, has appointed Sebastian Aigner technical director. He was formerly with Thyssen Transrapid System GmbH.

Flip Chip Technologies LLC, Phoenix, AZ, has named two product marketing managers for its flip-chip wafer-bumping and wafer-level chip-scale packaging products. Before joining Flip Chip, Bette A. Acker held positions at Rohm and Haas Co. Scott T. Barrett held positions in product planning, strategic planning management, and financial management at Intel Corp.

RVSI Vanguard, Tucson, AZ, a division of RVSI, has appointed Alex Wei Taiwan country manager. He was previously employed as director of semiconductor and new business development at Schmidt Scientific.

Brad Mattson, CEO of Mattson Technology Inc., recently received the Third Annual Silicon Valley Entrepreneurial Award given by the San Jose Business Journal. Mattson was given the award in the Technical Entrepreneur category for entrepreneurial spirit and performance in the technology industry.

Robert M. Butler, founder of Micro Glass Inc. Electronics, Tempe, AZ, recently passed away. Among his contributions to the semiconductor industry, he promoted wafer carrier standardization and designed the first wafer dump transfer system.
