In a deal valued at $225 million, Mitel Corp., Kanata, Ontario, Canada, has acquired all shares of Plessey Semiconductors Ltd., Swindon, UK, from parent company General Electric Co. The combined unit is expected to rank Mitel among the top ten networking and telecommunications chip companies; the deal gives Mitel additional design capabilities and manufacturing capacity, as well as additional expertise in RF and mixed signal design and system level integration. Plessey currently has annual sales of about $225 million, and officials expect the acquisition will help improve the operation`s performance.
Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has opened a new office in Tel-Aviv, Israel. The office establishes a regional marketing representative and customer support capability, and will provide access to Chartered`s process technologies for wafer manufacturing and full turnkey solutions through the company`s EDA and test and assembly partners.
GaSonics International, San Jose, CA, a supplier of integrated clean solutions for the process steps between etch and deposition, has opened a new product development and customer support facility in Israel. The facility will focus on developing software for GaSonics` new multichamber products and provide field support to customers in Israel.
