Semi in Russia
This summer, Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) will again host the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Executive Mission and Exhibit. This mission, running June 1-4, will bring together leaders from the semiconductor equipment and materials industry and leaders of local government and companies in the CIS to exchange ideas on the development of high technology.
Since SEMI`s last CIS mission, in 1996, the mayor of Moscow signed into law the creation of a "special industrial zone" in nearby Zelenograd, center of Russia`s electronics industry. This has created more favorable conditions for both local and foreign companies, including tax exemptions, energy payment preferences, and government-backed credit guarantees. Several foreign firms have already entered into joint ventures with local companies, including Hua Ko Electronics, International Rectifier, Ericsson, and Hitachi. At present, some 24 SEMI member companies and device manufacturers have established a presence in the CIS.
