Japan`s foreign market share up
Foreign share of the Japanese chip market rose 3.2 percentage points to a record high of 35.8%, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). American and other non-Japanese semiconductor-producing nations continued to make inroads into Japan`s market during 2Q97, up from 32.6% recorded in 1Q97. According to SIA president George Scalise, the increase reflects the value of cooperative relationships between foreign semiconductor makers and their Japanese customers over the past few years. The US and Japan had signed semiconductor agreements in 1986, 1991, and 1996.
