Romania`s research and manufacturing facilities

With the fall of the Iron Curtain, microelectronics and related technologies, which were almost exclusively dedicated to defense-related programs, are undergoing privatization and are expanding.

The focal point of Romania`s current activities in microelectronics is the National Institute for R&D in Microtechnologies (IMT), which interacts with two manufacturing enterprises - Microelectronica S.A. and Baneasa S.A., located in the Baneasa Industrial Park, in a suburb of Bucharest. IMT fosters innovation internally and through international cooperation to provide postgraduate education, perform multidisciplinary research, and interact with the semiconductor industry. Its activities encompass microelectronics, microsystem technology, and technology of semiconductor components. Projects include development of microfabrication technologies, advanced research on microstructures and microsystems, development of nonconventional architectures of microsystems, and characterization and fabrication processes. A variety of research projects, funded by the European Commission, are being conducted. IMT also provides technological assistance for small- and medium-sized enterprises, and organizes scientific events, including the International Conference on Semiconductors.

Microelectronica manufactures and markets MOS devices based on SGS technology; and optoelectronic products, such as LED displays and LED matrices and optocouplers. Baneasa, a maker of power diodes, rectifier bridges, transistors, and PC boards, has undergone privatization. For information on opportunities in Romania, contact Robert A.
