The Second China Electronics Industry ForumPreview

December 10-11, 1996, Shenzhen, China

China`s information technology industry will undergo an unprecedented expansion well into the next century. Demand for personal computers is forecast at $US 5 billion in the year 2000, up from $2.1 billion in 1996, with a concurrent doubling in demand for mid-range computers and workstations. The gap between domestic production and consumption of ICs is growing rapidly. Current domestic production of 245 million ICs is projected to increase tenfold to 2.5 billion pieces by 2000. Total electronic production is projected almost to triple in four years from $30 billion in 1996 to $80 billion in 2000. The opportunities for joint cooperation have kept pace; hundreds of cooperative project opportunities are forecast to join the active thousands, and priority is given to electronics as a key to China`s future.

In this effort at cooperation, the Second China Electronics Industry Forum, supported by the Ministry of Electronics Industry (MEI) of China, hosted by China National Electronics Import and Export Corporation (CEIEC), and organized by PennWell Publishing`s Advanced Technology Division/Electronics Group and PennWell Conferences and Exhibitions, will take place on December 10 and 11, 1996, at Shenzhen, China, just across the border from Hong Kong.

The program

A rich program awaits those interested in the China electronics market, with the participation of decision-makers from China`s key electronics, IC, and computer industries, and government and research organizations. The two-day meeting, conveniently scheduled the week following SEMICON Japan, provides a unique opportunity to acquaint oneself with the China market, to make valuable contacts with decision-makers, and to learn the facts firsthand from China`s industry leaders - a significant competitive advantage.

Two concurrent tracks will cover semiconductor manufacturing and PC manufacturing, and the topics include:

Discussions on investment and project opportunities and on how to pursue projects under development in China.

Case histories and success stories - from both the Chinese and the Western perspectives - on joint ventures, factory management, quality control and productivity, and marketing and distribution strategies.

Twenty or more authoritative speakers from China`s industry will present discussions on current initiatives in China, including: foreign investment situations and policies in the electronics industry; initiating new projects in China`s electronics industry, such as the flagship "909" semiconductor manufacturing project; present trends and developments in China`s semiconductor industry.

By invitation only, one hundred senior Chinese executives, representing the industry, regional and central government, and finance and trade, are expected to attend, ensuring the highest level of decision-maker participation from China. International speakers include senior representatives from multinational companies, such as Comdisco, Compaq, Ferrofluidics, Intel, Motorola, National Semiconductor, Philips, and Praxair, who will present their experience with joint ventures, factory management, quality control and productivity, and marketing strategies, as well as equipment, technology, and other aspects of manufacture in their facilities in China.
