SEMI Beijing conferenceattracts record numbers
The SEMI Beijing 96 Conference and Exposition, which closed November 25, was the largest SEMI event to date in Beijing, drawing 1531 attendees and more than 400 technical conference participants. The exposition featured 138 exhibitors representing 10 countries. The event highlighted a week of SEMI activities in China, which also included a market briefing, standards meetings, and a trade mission.
David Sielken, Asian business manager for Dublin, Ohio-based Ashland Chemical, said, SEMI Beijing ... [was] twice as good as last year`s show. The leads have been very good, and many more than I had expected." Peter Thompson, president of Metron Technology, Hong Kong, noted, "I think the show, with the combination of exposition and symposium, is a good venue for us to put ourselves in front of customers. SEMI is doing a good job in helping us to promote ourselves in China."
The SEMI technical symposium featured nearly 40 presentations covering the latest challenges and trends in semiconductor design, production, and packaging. A meeting on tariffs and trade was held at which issues pertaining to the importation of semiconductor equipment technology into China were discussed with US diplomat Mark Bayuk, who is based in Beijing. The SEMI Beijing 96 event also included a trade mission tour to four local fabs and institutes.
At SEMI-organized standards meetings during the show, Chinese and Western experts in process materials, chemicals, and gases gathered to discuss the future implementation of SEMI standards in China. SEMI`s VP Paul Davis said that to date, more than 50 of SEMI`s standards have been adopted as national standards in China.
