MCNC, Microcosm join on MEMS project

A new microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) design toolset is now available on an as-needed basis through a joint development initiative between the nonprofit Microelectronics Center of North Carolina (MCNC) and software developer Microcosm Technologies Inc. The toolset, based on Microcosm`s MEMCAD software package, offers a fully integrated suite of 3D design and modeling tools. Users can explore a range of thermo-electromechanical design spaces with MEMCAD`s advanced simulation and 3D visualization techniques.

While MEMS development has long been seen as a growth area for silicon technology, limited availability of design software has been a stumbling block. Under the initiative, users can sign up to work on the MEMCAD system for daily, weekly, or monthly blocks of time at MCNC`s MEMS Technology Applications Center, Research Triangle Park, NC.

The initiative is part of the MEMS Technology Network, a program funded by the Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and administered by MCNC. The Technology Network offers access to stock MEMS starting substrates and modular-based process technologies at finer granularities than previously available.

In addition, MEMCAD complements MCNC`s existing multiuser MEMS processes (MUMPs), a three-layer polysilicon surface micromachining process for creating MEMS devices. Through the MUMPs program, users can access design and device layout services, as well as on-site MEMS fabrication.
