May Day Party
05/01/2001
BY K.H. "WICKS" WICKREMASINGHE
Cathy was driving her daughter, Kathy, to the Advanced Packaging May Day party. Cathy planned to be there 15 minutes early (to straighten the ribbons in Kathy's hair) by driving 60 mph on the highway and 30 mph on the 20-mile stretch of side road. "I am sure we missed the exit," muttered Cathy.
"Yes, Mom. We passed it awhile ago," said Kathy. When asked why she didn't mention it, Kathy replied "And have you go on as usual about backseat drivers?"
By increasing her speed by 10 mph on both the highway and the side road, Cathy was able to go to the next exit, turn around, drive to the correct exit and arrive with 9 minutes to spare.
How far after the correct exit did Cathy realize that she missed the exit, and how far was it from that point to the next exit if both these distances were integral values?

CrossNumber 60

Answer: Benjamin
Solution: If a husband bought X items and a wife Y items, they paid $X2 and $Y2. Then X2 - Y2 = 105. I.e., (X + Y)(X - Y) = 105. The factors of 105 are 35, 3; 21, 5; and 15, 7.
If (X + Y)(X - Y) = 35 x 3; X = 19 and Y = 16
If (X + Y)(X - Y) = 21 x 5; X = 13 and Y = 8
If (X + Y)(X - Y) = 15 x 7; X = 11 and Y = 4
Because Charles bought 7 more items than Bernice, he bought 11 items and she bought 4 items. Because Benjamin bought 11 more items than Cora, be bought 19 items and she bought 8 items. That leaves Althea with 16 items and Alfred with 13 items. Althea's husband is the man who bought 19 items.
