European Soccer Scores

During one of the European soccer cup tournaments, the Austrians scored 34 more goals than the Belgians, who scored 26 less goals than the Czechs. The English scored 8 more than the Danes, and the Czechs scored 13 more goals than the English. The total goals scored by the Belgians and the English was 37.

How many goals were scored by each of the five teams?

Greetings Readers,

Beginning with the January 2003 issue of Advanced Packaging, we will be expanding our coverage of the industry, and unfortunately this means that this is the last appearance of Wicks and his puzzles in Advanced Packaging. This was not an easy decision because we know how popular Think Tank is. We owe it to the industry, though, to fit as much coverage as possible into our pages. We thank you for your support and interest in Think Tank over the years!

CrossNumber 78

The Sports Card Exchange
Answer: Alf 7, Ben 11 and Chuck 21.
Solution: Let Alf, Ben and Chuck have X, Y and Z cards.

From the clues:
2(Y - 6 + 1) = (X + 6 - 1); 2Y - X = 15 (Eq 1)
3(Z - 14 + 1) = Y + 14 - 1; 3Z - Y = 52 (Eq 2)
6(X - 4 + 1) = Z + 4 - 1; 6X - Z = 21 (Eq 3)
Eq 1 x 18 + Eq 2 + 3 x Eq 3 gives us 35Y = 385; thus, Y = 11.
