Answer: 11 5-cent stamps, 120 1-cent stamps and 9 25-cent stamps.
Solution: Let the number of penny stamps be 1, which will be worth 1A cents. Let the number of nickel stamps be 6B, which will be worth 30B cents. And let the number of quarter stamps be worth 25C cents.
6(B + C) = A;
A + 5B + 25C = 400;
11B + 31C = 400;
B = (400 - 31C)/11.
Therefore, A = 120; B = 11; and C = 9 for a total of $4.00.
