Wireless temperature monitoring system
Accsense’s wireless monitoring system helps medical, pharmaceutical, and laboratory personnel keep track of temperatures, CO2 levels, humidity, and other measurements. The system works well with refrigerators, freezers, and incubators, keeping automated logs and sending alarm notifications via e-mail, phone, or pager. The system can be set up quickly with no additional hardware or software. An internet connection is all that is required to run the system. The device complies with USP 797, CLIA, JCAHO, FDA, AABB, and other industry regulations.

Stainless-steel overbraided PTFE hose
AdvantaPure is now offering stainless-steel overbraided PTFE hose in six variations. Called APFOS, the hose offers the purity of PTFE fluoropolymer with the durability and enhanced pressure carrying capabilities of stainless steel. The hoses can be used for applications in the chemical, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and other high-purity industries. The core provides non-restrictive flow and an inert surface to transport critical fluids. The hose handles temperatures ranging from ???65° to +450°F (???54° to +232°C). The steel reinforcement permits higher pressure uses, improves flexibility, reduces the possibility of kinking, and protects the core. Stock offerings consist of white or conductive black PTFE cores in smooth or convoluted styles. Silicone jacketed hoses are also available. APFOS sizes range from 1/4-inch through 4-inch nominal I.D., depending on style.

Piezo force microscopy module
Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) has emerged as the preeminent tool for nanoscale imaging, spectroscopy and manipulation of ferroelectric materials. Asylum Research has developed a new piezo force module that enables very high sensitivity, high bias, and crosstalk-free measurements of piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics, multiferroics, and biological systems. The module is an MFP-3D accessory that enables high-voltage PFM measurements and advanced imaging modes for characterizing the sample material. A bias is applied to the AFM tip using proprietary electronics, a high voltage cantilever, and sample holder. The vertical and lateral response amplitude measures the local electromechanical activity of the surface, and the phase of the response yields information on the polarization direction. High probing voltages, up to +220 V, can characterize even very weak piezo materials. Patent-pending imaging modes, dual frequency resonance tracking, and band excitation effectively use resonance enhancement in PFM and provide new information on local response and energy dissipation, which cannot be obtained by standard AFM scanning modes.

Dry heating block for pathogen testing
A new product by bioMérieux, the VIDAS® Heat and Go, is a dry heating block used to heat samples undergoing pathogen testing. It has proven to substantially reduce technician handling time and material cost, as well as help standardize the process. Typically, boiling water is used to heat food sample cultures prior to testing in order to detect target organisms. Lab workers manually label tubes and transfer samples in and out of the tubes and the boiling water bath. The new heating block eliminates the need for labeling and transferring the sample tubes. The use of a dry heating block offers food laboratories increased safety in pathogen detection. The VIDAS Heat and Go provides enhanced traceability of sample results, eliminating the risk of mislabeling sample tubes. Additionally, the dry heating block ensures the appropriate temperature is maintained throughout the heating process.

Wafer pre-aligner
The In-Sight® 1820 vision-based wafer pre-aligner, developed by Cognex Corp., provides precise, non-contact measurements of wafer position and orientation. The device determines wafer position and orientation in less than half a second, while mechanical pre-aligners must typically spin wafers for several seconds. NotchMax, the newest of Cognex Corp.’s geometric pattern finding devices, aligns wafers with a center position accuracy of ??15 ??m and an orientation accuracy of ??0.05°. More accurate pre-alignment saves fine alignment steps inside a process tool to boost throughput. The device can handle changing wafer sizes and types with simple parameter changes, and the non-contact design minimizes wafer handling and potential damage to the product.

High-tack polymer flooring
Dycem has introduced new Clean-Zone washable, semi-permanent flooring, available in a speckled surface design, titanium (grey speckled) and cobalt (blue speckled). The high-tack polymer flooring has an extremely smooth surface that conforms to the feet and wheels to remove more particulates and bacteria with every step. Larger Clean-Zone areas can be designed to fit specific contamination control requirements, offering an unavoidable area to ensure total removal even during busy shift changes. The speckled design will help mask the contamination on the surface between cleanings. Dycem flooring is also available in solid colors. Strategically placed Clean-Zone floor mats can also eliminate the threat of cross-contamination. Clean-Zone eliminates the need for expensive adhesive mats, booties, and shoe cleaners. All Dycem high-performance flooring products have a full 3-year warranty with an average active life of 3???5 years. The Clean-Zone material is maintained with facility approved detergents, disinfectants, and sporicidal cleaning solutions and will fit into established SOPs.

Cleaning wipes kill resistant bacteria on contact
The MRSA bacterium (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is the target of a new cleaning system developed by Kaivac, Inc. The company recently unveiled the KaiFly, a cleaner dispenser and pad used to wipe flat surfaces before the cleaning solution is swiped away by a squeegee, killing MRSA on contact. It has potential use in schools, hospitals, and other public areas. In tests, flat or string mops???even microfiber mops???left 35 times more bacteria than the new wipe, and standard rag cleaning (with the solution left to air dry) left behind 85 times more bacteria. According to the company, the new wipes could reduce school absences by half.

Remote nano pump
The KD Scientific Model KDS 310 nano pump is used exclusively with micro syringes from 0.5???250 ??l. Its small size, remote control, and mounting arm make it useful for work with micromanipulators, stereotaxic frames, and other clamping devices. The controller can be 6 ft away from the pumping unit, which is useful for safely pumping into reaction vessels, pumping radioactive chemicals, or mounting in small places next to an experiment. The single syringe infusion/withdrawal pump consists of a controller and a remote pump head designed to use microliter syringes and deliver nanoliter volumes at low flow rates. The microprocessor based controller uses a bright display and membrane keypad with a simple, menu-prompt system for easy setup. The pump features preset rate and volume control. The dispense volume is displayed continuously and the pump shuts off automatically when the preset volume has been reached.

Spring-closed valves
Millipore Corp. has launched new aseptic valves now available with PTFE diaphragms. The thermal and chemical durability of PTFE makes it a desirable material for diaphragms in demanding, multi-product processes. The new spring-closed valve seal for PTFE diaphragms is based on a forced cup spring technology (patent pending), which applies pressure over the diaphragm seat and maintains this pressure over time. This technique reduces the maintenance needs with prolonged life time. Millipore’s NovAseptic® valves are available in sizes 0.5 to 3 inches and are used in a wide range of process applications. The aseptic design of the valves eliminates dead legs and minimizes product hold-up, which facilitates safe and cost-efficient production. In addition, the valves are easily cleanable and can be sterilized in place (CIP/SIP). For more information call 800-MILLIPORE.
