Sony aims to cut LCD TV costs 20%-30% via design reform

03/07/2005  March 7, 2005 - Sony Corp. said Friday it expects to cut production costs for liquid crystal display televisions by 20% to 30% in the latter half of next fiscal year through design reforms, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. That, along with other steps, would allow Sony to weather likely steady declines in LCD TV prices, the Japanese consumer electronics maker said.

January Semiconductor Sales Show Modest Decline

03/07/2005  (March 7, 2005) San Jose, Calif. — Worldwide microchip sales of $18.3 billion in January were 0.5% below December 2004 sales of $18.4 billion, but 17.5% higher than January 2004 sales of $15.6 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reports. SIA points out that January is usually a weak month for microchip sales, following the typically strong holiday season.

Intel founder Gordon Moore to receive Marconi Society's Lifetime Achievement Award

Moore, the chemical engineer who in 1968 co-founded Intel, spearheading decades of technological research and developments that made the company a leader in semiconductor manufacturing and technology, has been named the Marconi Society's 2005 Lifetime Achievement recipient. The award will be presented on November 4, at the annual Marconi Society awards dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
